Trailer Lighting & LED Compatibility Guide (2019-2026)
Why is my truck showing “Trailer Disconnected”, error lights, or no trailer lights/brakes when towing my Futura/SHIFTR trailer?
The high-performance LED lighting on your Futura trailer is designed for maximum visibility and long-term reliability.
However, because LED's draw significantly less power than traditional bulbs, some modern tow vehicles may fail to "see" the trailer or display erroneous dashboard warnings.
Affected Tow Vehicles & Specific Fixes
Ford (F-150, Super Duty, Expedition)
- Issue: Smart Connector ignores LED trailers.
- The Fix: Connect trailer, close all doors, and hold the brake pedal for 5 seconds to "wake up" the 7-way 12V pin.
- Recall: Check for Ford Recall NHTSA 26V104 (Software update for Trailer Module).
Chevrolet & GMC (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon)
- Issue: 12V charging pin often physically disconnected from factory.
- The Fix: Locate the red/orange wire near the under-hood fuse box and connect it to the threaded power stud.
- Detection: Use "Tow/Haul" mode to ensure consistent charging voltage.
RAM & Jeep (Ram 1500-3500, Wagoneer)
- Issue: High sensitivity to LED resistance; "Trailer Disconnected" dash errors.
- The Fix: Install a 7-pin Load Resistor Adapter (e.g., Curt 57003) between the truck and trailer plug.
Nissan (Titan, Frontier, Armada)
- Issue: 7-way connector is "cold" (no power/brakes).
- The Fix: Requires the installation of a 3-relay factory tow kit in the passenger kick panel or engine bay.
Toyota (Tundra 2022+, Sequoia 2023+)
- Issue: Smart CANBUS throttling.
- The Fix: The vehicle must be in Tow/Haul mode for the computer to send high-amperage charging to the trailer.
European SUVs (VW Atlas, Audi Q5/Q7, Porsche Cayenne, BMW, X5, X6 X7.)
- Issue: Lights strobing/flickering.
- The Fix: A LED-compatible 7-way adapter with built-in resistors is required to stabilize the pulsing signal.
