Trailer lights not working? Here's how to fix it | Futura Trailers
If your trailer lights aren't working properly, follow these steps to diagnose and potentially fix the issue.
These steps are applicable to both Futura Trailers and other trailer models.
Troubleshooting Steps
1. Check the Ground Connection
Ensure that the ground wire (usually the white wire) from the trailer's wiring plug is securely connected to the trailer frame. A poor ground connection is the most common cause of trailer light issues, leading to symptoms like flickering, dimness, or complete failure.
Clean the ground connection point to remove any rust or paint that may be affecting the contact.
2. Inspect the Trailer Connector
Examine the trailer connector for any signs of damage or corrosion. If the lights work when you move the connection but fail when stationary, the connector may be faulty.
Clean the pins of the connector with a wire brush or electrical contact cleaner.
3. Test the Tow Vehicle Wiring
Use a trailer light tester to check the wiring from your tow vehicle. Plug the tester into the vehicle's connector and activate the lights to see if they function properly.
If the tester indicates problems, check the vehicle's fuses and wiring for any faults.
4. Check the Bulbs (if not LED lights)
Remove the lens covers and visually inspect the bulbs for any broken filaments or signs of burnout. Replace any faulty bulbs.
If using LED lights, ensure they are compatible with your vehicle's system, as some vehicles may not recognize the low power consumption of LEDs.
5. Examine for Chafed Wires
Inspect the wiring for any chafing or damage, especially where wires may rub against sharp edges or metal. Look for exposed wires that could cause a short circuit.
If you find damaged wires, repair them by splicing in new wire or using heat-shrink tubing for insulation.
6. Use a Multimeter
If you have access to a multimeter, check for continuity in the wiring. Connect one lead to the wire and the other to the ground; if you get a reading of zero ohms, there is a short to ground.
7. Consider Lamp-Out Sensors
If your tow vehicle is a late model, it may have lamp-out sensors that are not compatible with LED lights. In this case, you might need a lamp-out sensor bypass unit to ensure proper functioning.
