Battery Charging Best Practices for Storage

How to keep your Futura trailer battery healthy during extended storage periods.

For general battery troubleshooting, see Trailer Battery is Flat.

Keeping Your Battery Charged During Storage

If your trailer will be stored for more than two weeks without use, connect the supplied battery charger to maintain charge. The charger connects via the DC port on the SmartControl control box and can safely remain plugged in for extended periods — it will not overcharge the battery.

The supplied Futura charger is a slower, maintenance-rate charger. This makes it ideal for long-term storage because it gently tops up the battery without stress-cycling the cells.

Storage Charging Guidelines

  • Connect the charger via the DC port on the SmartControl control box (not directly to battery terminals)
  • The charger can remain connected indefinitely during storage
  • If the trailer has a solar panel, the panel will supplement the charger but is not effective when the trailer is stored indoors or in a covered area with limited sunlight
  • Check battery voltage monthly during storage: a fully charged gel battery should read 12.8V or above at rest (measured with no load, 24 hours after charging)
  • If the battery will not reach 12.4V after a full charge cycle, it is too sulphated and needs replacement
  • Below 12.0V after charging indicates battery failure — replace immediately

Battery Box Replacement

Replacement battery boxes are available through Futura. Contact your dealer or submit a parts request via the Futura website with your VIN to order the correct fitment for your trailer.
