How to get rust off rims (for alloy wheels)

Causes, Prevention, and Maintenance Tips

Keeping your alloy wheels in good condition isn't just for looks - it's important for their longevity as well.

The principles here apply to alloy rims found both on car and trailer wheels.

In this article we'll cover:

The difference that proper cleaning and maintenance can make is huge.

Clean Alloy Wheel âś…

Causes of Rust On Rims

Brake Dust Build-Up:

As brake pads wear down, they release fine particles that adhere to wheel surfaces. If not cleaned regularly, these particles oxidize upon exposure to moisture and air.

The build-up of brake dust, which contains iron particles, can cause rust staining on alloy wheels over time. When these particles settle on the wheel surface, they oxidize, leading to corrosion that appears as rust-like stains.

This phenomenon is often mistaken for traditional rusting, which typically occurs on ferrous metals.

Unlike steel, alloy wheels are resistant to rust, but they can still corrode - however the signs are different.

With steel wheels, they can rust and may appear white or chalk-like. This is different from the reddish-brown rust found on steel parts.

Environmental Factors:

Road salt, moisture, and pollutants, especially during winter months, exacerbate corrosion.

Improper Cleaning Products:

Using harsh or unsuitable cleaners can strip protective coatings, leaving wheels vulnerable to corrosion.

How to Prevent Rust on Wheel Rims

Regular Cleaning:

Clean your wheels weekly to remove brake dust and grime.

Use pH-Neutral Cleaners:

Choose a cleaner specifically designed for alloy wheels to avoid damaging the finish.

Dry Thoroughly:

After washing, ensure wheels are completely dry to prevent moisture-related oxidation.

Apply Protective Coatings:

Use a wheel sealant or wax after cleaning to create a barrier against contaminants.

Inspect Regularly:

Check wheels for signs of damage or corrosion to address issues early.

How to Clean Rust Off Rims

Cleaning rusty wheels isn't challenging - but it's crucial to perform consistently to maintain their luster.

Rinse:

To start cleaning rusty rims, begin by thoroughly rinsing the wheels with water to remove loose dirt and debris.

Apply Cleaner:

Spray a wheel cleaner onto the rims, allowing it to sit for 2 - 4 minutes to break down grime.

We'd recommend a specialized car wheel rust remover like Meguiar's Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner.

A proper car rim rust remover will be most effective to remove the rust.

Important Note:

Whatever product you go for, make sure you follow the instructions on the bottle.

Certain wheel cleaners can begin to degrade wax/polish in as little as 30 seconds to a minute. Be careful!

Household items like white vinegar can be an alternative option, but proceed with care. Professionals do not advise using it to clean rusted alloy wheels.

The acidity of vinegar can damage the surface and the clear coat of your wheels.

If you do choose to use vinegar, you should dilute it with water or another base.

You can use also use baking soda, whether on its own, or combine it with vinegar or dish soap.

Scrub:

Using a soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth, gently scrub in circular motions, focusing on stained areas.

In the absence of a specialized brush, an old toothbrush can serve as a substitute.

Rinse Again:

Rinse the wheels thoroughly with water to remove rust from rims and all cleaner residues.

Dry Completely:

Use a microfiber towel to dry the wheels, preventing water spots.

Polish and Protect:

Apply a wheel polish or sealant for added shine and long-term protection.

This is an important step in ensuring they stay rust free.
