Checking Brake Wiring Routing on Futura Lowering Trailers

How to inspect and correct brake wiring routing on Futura lowering trailers to prevent damage from the lowering mechanism.

Why This Matters

On Futura lowering trailers, the deck lowers and raises past the brake wiring routing area near the wheels.

If brake wires are incorrectly routed during initial setup or after servicing, the lowering mechanism can crush or pinch the wires, resulting in brake failure or reduced braking performance.

Compliance note: Brake wiring integrity is safety-critical. This check should be performed during pre-delivery inspection (PDI), after any brake servicing, and during routine maintenance.

Crushed or damaged brake wires must be replaced immediately: do not operate the trailer until repaired.

Inspection Procedure

  1. With the trailer in the fully raised position, visually inspect all brake wires from the chassis down to each wheel assembly.
  2. Check that no brake wire passes through or near the path of the lowering mechanism arms or deck supports.
  3. Lower the deck slowly using the SmartControl™ remote while watching the brake wires. Stop immediately if any wire is being contacted or compressed.
  4. Raise the deck fully and re-route any wires that showed contact. Secure with cable ties to frame points that do not move during the lowering cycle.
  5. Test brakes on a flat surface at low speed after any re-routing, or test by pulling the breakaway switch — all four brakes should lock up when the breakaway is pulled.

For Dealers: PDI Checklist Addition

Add the following line item to the Pre-Delivery Inspection checklist for all lowering trailers:

PDI Item: Verify brake wiring routing clears lowering mechanism through full range of travel (fully raised to fully lowered). Confirm no contact or pinch points. Test brakes after verification.
