Can I Add a Hand Brake to My Futura Trailer?

Which Futura trailers include a hand brake as standard, and how to add one to models that don’t.

Short Answer

Futura trailers are fitted with a hand brake or park brake as standard on the X model (NZ and AU) and LTE Super Tourer trailers.

All other models do not include a hand brake as standard. Aftermarket hand brake kits are available, but installation requires changing the brake hubs on one axle and is a significant modification.

Why Most Futura Trailers Don’t Include a Hand Brake

Futura’s lowering trailer design uses a torsion axle suspension system and electronic SmartControl lowering mechanism. The deck lowering and raising cycle applies and releases load in a controlled manner.

A mechanical park brake was not included on most models because the trailer is intended to remain coupled to the tow vehicle when loaded, and the tow vehicle’s own park brake secures the combination.

Aftermarket Options

Aftermarket hand brake kits are available from third-party suppliers and Futura Trailers direct. These kits typically require:

  • Replacing the brake hub assemblies on one axle to accommodate a mechanical cable connection
  • Routing and mounting a cable-operated lever
  • Professional installation by a qualified brake specialist

Futura can supply hand brake kits — contact your dealer or submit a parts request via the Futura website for pricing and availability. If you choose to fit a kit, ensure it is rated for your trailer’s GVM.

Compliance note: Any brake modification must comply with AS/NZS 2981 (NZ/AU) or FMVSS 135 (US). Have the installation inspected and certified by a qualified professional before use.

Futura’s Recommendation

For parking security, Futura recommends using wheel chocks rated for your trailer’s weight. Place chocks on both sides of at least one wheel when the trailer is unhitched or parked on any incline.

Also store the trailer in the lowered position: the trailer cannot roll when the back end is on the ground. These are the simplest and most reliable methods to prevent the trailer from rolling.
