Intermittent Operation of Your Futura Trailer SmartControl Remote (2.4GHz)

Here's what to do

Futura Trailers SmartControl™ Remote

If your Futura SmartControl™ remote is working intermittently, here's what to do

The symptoms:

  • Remote control responds inconsistently.
  • Functions (raise, lower, winch in/out) work sometimes but not others.
  • Reduced range of the remote.
  • The issue seems to occur more frequently in certain locations or at certain times.

The cause

Your Futura Trailer's SmartControl wireless remote operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency band.

This is a common frequency used by many wireless devices, including Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, microwave ovens, cordless phones, and some other remote controls.

Interference occurs when multiple devices transmit radio waves on the same or nearby frequencies, potentially disrupting the signal between your remote and the trailer's receiver.

Think of it like trying to have a conversation in a crowded room where many people are talking simultaneously – it can be difficult to hear and understand each other clearly.

Why is Wi-Fi a Common Culprit?

Modern homes and businesses often have Wi-Fi networks operating on the 2.4 GHz band.

If your trailer is near a strong Wi-Fi signal, especially one using the same or overlapping channels as your remote, it can lead to interference.

Troubleshooting Steps for Customers:

Please try the following steps to troubleshoot potential interference issues with your SmartControl™ remote.

1. Check the Remote's Batteries

Ensure the batteries in your remote are fresh and have sufficient power. Weak batteries can significantly reduce the signal strength, making it more susceptible to interference. Replace the batteries with new ones to rule this out.

2. Increase Distance from Potential Interference Sources

When operating the remote, try to position yourself closer to the trailer's receiver unit.

Be aware of the proximity of your Wi-Fi router to the trailer. If possible, try operating the remote further away from your router.

Consider if there are other 2.4 GHz devices in the immediate vicinity (e.g., other wireless remotes, Bluetooth speakers) that might be active and causing interference. Temporarily turning them off can help diagnose if they are the issue.

3. Minimize Obstructions

Physical obstacles between the remote and the trailer's receiver (walls, metal objects, etc.) can weaken the signal and make it more vulnerable to interference. Try to maintain a clear line of sight if possible.

4. If You Have a Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)

While you cannot change the operating frequency of your trailer's remote, ensuring that your other wireless devices (phones, laptops, etc.) are connected to your router's 5 GHz band can help reduce congestion on the 2.4 GHz band.

Refer to your Wi-Fi router's manual for instructions on how to connect to the 5 GHz network.

5. Consider Changing Your Wi-Fi Router's Channel (Advanced Users)

If you are comfortable accessing your Wi-Fi router's settings, you can try changing the 2.4 GHz channel it uses.

Log in to your router's configuration page (usually via a web browser – consult your router's manual for the address and login details).

Look for wireless settings and then the channel selection for the 2.4 GHz band.

Experiment with different channels, particularly channels 1, 6, and 11, as these are often less prone to overlapping interference.

Important: Only make changes to your router's settings if you are comfortable doing so. Incorrect settings can disrupt your internet connectivity.

6. Re-pairing the Remote and Receiver (If Applicable)

Consult your Futura Trailer's SmartControl™ system manual to see if there is a procedure for re-pairing the remote control with the receiver unit on the trailer. This can sometimes resolve connection issues.

7. Check for Other Unusual Sources

In rare cases, strong external electromagnetic interference sources might be present. Consider if the issue occurs in specific locations where such sources might exist (e.g., near powerful radio transmitters, industrial equipment).

If the Problem Persists

If you have tried these troubleshooting steps and your SmartControl™ remote continues to operate intermittently, please contact Futura Trailers customer support with the following information:

  • Your trailer's model and year of manufacture.
  • A detailed description of the issue, including when it occurs and any specific circumstances.
  • Information about your Wi-Fi setup (if applicable), including whether you have a dual-band router.
  • Any other wireless devices that might be operating nearby.

Our support team will be happy to assist you further in diagnosing the problem and exploring potential solutions.

Important Note: Tampering with the internal components of your remote or receiver unit is not recommended and may void your warranty. Please always consult Futura Trailers customer support for assistance with any technical issues.
